Seeding

Postby lunoob on Fri May 30, 2008 12:22 pm

Okay, I've downloaded the "Mepis32 Xorg7 3 experimental 32 bit" ISO and it shows in Ktorrent as 'Seeding.'

Is that all I need to do, just leave Ktorrent running so people can get at my 'chunks'?

Exactly.

Whenever you close KTorrent, or log off your computer, you disappear from the internet, of course. But the next time you go online, and launch KTorrent, you will be seeding again.

Some of us rarely shut down our machines, so there are a few of us a few seeding all the time. Friday night through Sunday night is a good time to be on and seeding, as it seems more people are actively online and may be wanting to download.

But you never know! Hence: we try to keep all the current Mepis ISOs seeded around the clock, all week long.

Excellent.

'Nuther question(s) . . .

But first the context:

"I" have 3 machines running, (7 in the household) 2 in the garage, and one inside. The one inside I've dubbed "Super Computer," as it's the best I have. "Super" runs M7 with Dual core 2.8 GHz ea., 1.024 GB RAM.

My primary garage box is running M7 with a 1.6 GHz CPU with 512 MB RAM and is the first machine from which I'm 'seeding,' because I was uncertain about borkage. My secondary garage machine is running Etch w/KDE with a 733 MHz PII with 128 MB RAM  - and is more or less disposable.

DL & UL speeds are fine on all machines AFAIK. I _could_ seed from all 3 machines. But they're all the same 'public' IP. I wouldn't assume that would matter, but no one considers me a network guy (except a couple of Windows die-hards).

Question(s):

Any reason not to? Any advantage?

I've never tried to do that, so I don't know if there would be any problems.

I know my son has run torrents on Caprine1 while I'm running other torrents on the CUSL2 network box. Things were running a little slow because of us competing for bandwidth on our shared home network/ADSL connection.

I've never tried running the same torrent on more than one box on our network.

As far as seeding the Mepis torrents, we're in good shape right now, so there's really no need to do that. But if you feel like experimenting to see how that works, I'd like to know what you experience. When Mepis 8.0 or 7.5 or whatever gets released we might like to see extra seeding capacity. I think we have enough people so that it's not a real need, though.

There are 11 of us on the role as Torrent Team members right now, plus several others who are not signed-up members, but who do come in and seed when the Betas and RCs start flying. This ought to give us a good solid base for any swarm, which should then easily become self-sustaining after the first day or two. I'm pretty confident we can distribute the seeding amongst ourselves without expecting anyone to go to heroic measures, even in a Final Release scenario.

Thanks for asking about it. And if you decide to try it, let me know what happens.

I think this doesnt make sense, cause your bandwith is limited,
so you cant give (seed) more with more computers seeding.
Best to use this compters which runs 24/7 anyway.

i think it would be also a problem with the port-forwarding on the router.

Okay! What kind of break can you give me for gigawatts per month? :D

Even though we don't generally use all that much bandwidth, I think you're probably right. At least it isn't likely worth messing with.
