Arch on the rise ...

Postby Farcry on Wed Apr 23, 2008 6:45 pm

Arch certainly seems to be steadily on the rise according to this trend comparison from Google:

Rough this comparison may be, but probably no less valid or interesting than the over-egged DistroWatch page hit comparisons (yawn)?

I'm sure Arch is becoming more widespread as it is very good. Certainly not a distro for beginners, but it needs less work than Gentoo.
I'm in 2 minds about Arch. I should really give it a thorough test, but I keep thinking, 'is it worth it'?
I can install antiX-base and get set up to X in a matter of minutes on my box, with little effort. From there, the world is your oyster.
With arch, it is not as simple (though the docs provided to make it easy for someone with some linux knowledge) nor as fast.
The result ie antiX-sid v arch is not that much different. In fact some antiX user has claimed antiX is faster!.

If you're looking for a really fast os that just works out of the box then, anticapitalista, I think you're right, antix is the choice...hands down. It is easy to install, takes only a few minutes and requires only a little previous Linux knowledge / experience. I have used it and upgraded all along since Spartacus and am now anxiously awaiting the release of 7.2 final.
Like Mepis, antix just works.

I think that one of the main attractions to Arch. on the other hand, is that it doesn't just work. It insists that you make it work. That is, it makes you learn. I think that's a good thing, although I put Arch on the shelf a while back after a brief run. Personally, even though it is a great os and I do plan to keep up with its development, I really didn't care for it all that much (all me, I'm sure). I may give it another shot at some point in the future but, for now, I find myself asking the same question as you: with antix (and a few others) in the game, is it really worth it? For some, absolutely. For me, maybe not right now. Anyway, keep up the good work with antix! Thanks.

I recently gave Arch a shot (http://sblinux.org/pages/archwk01.html ) and I thought it was pretty good, once it was configured. It has decent hardware detection and the documentation is excellent. I could see using Arch as my main OS but I am perfectly happy with Mepis 7 and antiX. Pacman takes some getting used to after apt-getting for so long. I like Debian based distros and antiX and Mepis are the best.
