Well, I've been experimenting a bit more with distros for the Eee 701 4G and
eeebuntu Standard 1.0 from http://www.eeebuntu.org/ has now got my top vote, higher even than Slax 6.0.7. Installation is very easy and quite fast.
Everything works straightaway and if you like Gnome, it's a pretty comprehensive desktop installation. Wireless networking is smoother to handle than with Slax, and the Ubuntu and Debian repos can provide plenty of extra packages. However, it takes a lot of SSD space, and some judicious hacking of unwanted stuff is recommended (for me it was Compiz, the Avant Window Navigator, Evolution, OpenOffice.org extra language files, etc). Anyway, with all my usual extra productivity apps installed, I've got a reasonably healthy 800MB or thereabouts still to play with on the SSD.
Also, I've managed to clone the working installation to a USB flash drive too!
I'm going to do a little writeup of some Eee distros for my site http://appstogo.mcfadzean.org.uk which hopefully will be ready this weekend.
